Review: Reproduction Pulsar Jeweller's Case Wrench as made by Bruce Wegmann(USA) |
Reviewer: Campbell Hardie, Scotland(UK) I currently only own one Pulsar but I want to look after it as best I can. I planned to buy a flat wrench set so that I could change the batteries myself, when I stumbled upon a forum thread that mentioned Bruce Wegmann has on occasion made to order a tool based on the original Pulsar ones designed specifically to open up P2/3’s, Omega TC1s & TC2s and early large body Hamilton's. I ordered one from Bruce and it arrived a few weeks later having flown 6000 miles for about $55 in total.
First Impressions: It’s a solidly built piece of kit, with a plastic grip handle and metal front half. The plastic handle feels solid and securely attached to the steel and I had no worries about it being loose or coming apart under use. It’s over engineered and that was a reassurance as I’m protective about my watches.
Ease of Use: This is incredibly simple. You merely slot the tool into the case back so that all four teeth are in the notches and turn. The torque that can be applied by wrist action alone is enough to open just about any watch with only a minimum of effort and it’s so precisely made that there is virtually no play when it’s in position. That means the odds of slipping and scratching the back of the watch is vastly reduced, if not eliminated altogether. Putting the case back on is simply a reversal of the process.
Cons: There’s only one and it’s pretty minor, it’s not evenly balanced as the front half is metal and the handle is plastic so it wants to tip forward slightly. This almost caused me to scratch my watch the first time I used it but once you are used to it this becomes pretty much irrelevant as you automatically compensate for this without thinking.
Summary: If you own any of the watches listed above and change your own batteries then I’d recommend this as an essential. The flat wrenches can too easily slip and scratch your watch and this one is a far superior design. It’s a bargain. To order from Bruce contact him at: BruceWegmann@gmail.com. The originals are as rare as hen’s teeth and expensive, so do your watch a favour and get one of these. You will not regret it. |
